Director Bala in an interview about Surya : "Normally I won’t hesitate to smoke. But I won’t prefer to smoke in front of Surya, since Surya hates smoking. If he finds some one smoking, he reluctantly leaves the spot. Even Kollywood industry's supporting actors love to spend their time in pubs, bars, parties etc., Surya is slightly different from them. All he knows is : 'His home & Shooting Spot'. Actually that shows the way how his father has shaped his son's character. At the same time if I asked Surya to smoke (or) drink in a scene indicating that the scene is mandatory, he won’t simply hesitate to do it. That is his dedication. Surya progress is really quite amazing. I am seeing improvement in his acting in every film. Even though he had changed his looks, style, modulation in the recent years, he has not changed his character a bit. He still remains the same 'Surya' I had seen him during the shooting of 'Nantha'. When I approached Surya to do a cameo role in 'Avan Ivan', he readily accepted the offer. I am glad that he has not allowed his head weight to overcome him despite his career progress."
(In 'Anjaan', inorder to have a 'badass' look he is in a compulsion to perform some smoking scenes. Surya preferred tooth sticks instead of 'Cigarettes' for those scenes.)
